Shower waste pumps

We prefer to sell the Whale Gulper pump (made by Munster Simms).  It is reliable, simple to install, guaranteed and spares are easily available.

The diaphragm system was initially quite noisy but recently variations have become available which either, through the transformer rating, or digitally, control the speed of the diaphragm, thereby very substantially reducing the noise level.  So much so that should the right system be chosen then they can certainly now be regarded as being quiet.

Standard Kits

We cannot recommend that this is purchased by itself.  It was the original kit and still remains the cheapest.  You may find it noisy.  Linked with the digital unit add on it becomes, when properly adjusted, very quiet.

If used by itself it is switched through the shower pull cord or independently.  It will run prior to the start of the water entering the pump.  It, therefore, gulps air - hence the noise.

This is the cheapest version you should consider using.  It is much better than the manual pump but not as good as the manual plus the digital add on unit.

It incorporates a flow switch in the cold water feed to the shower.  It, therefore, does not operate unless water is flowing avoiding the noise mentioned for the manual pump.

Please note.  If you are using a gravity shower an extra flow switch is needed for the hot feed.

Similar to above except for the gully outlet which is to be used when the fall of the shower floor is formed in the concrete screed.

This is the digital add on unit which is purchased with the manual pump.  This is the quietest system.  It can be added to an existing installed system whether manual or automatic.

The water flow rate. through the sensor, controls the switching and the speed of the pump diaphragm.  This considerably reduces noise.

Mira Advance/Flex and Redring Selectonic applications

Both Redring and Mira have brought to the market special versions of their popular showers to link to the Whale pump. This transformer is a different version from for each company.  You may note that there is not a flow switch or sensor in the kit.

The switching for the pump is contained within a circuit board within the shower eliminating any possible problems with the flow switch.  The speed of the pump is controlled by the transformer which has been matched to the flow rate of the shower.  The result is much less noise.  Please note, however it is still not as quiet as the Whale digital kit.

Similar to above except for the gully outlet which is to be used when the fall of the shower floor is formed in the concrete screed.

Spares and accessories

Pump  Providing it has been correctly installed few problems will occur.  In fact, apart from diaphragms needing replacing we have never taken a pump back in which has failed on our test bench.

Diaphragm kit  Comes complete with the flap valves for the pump head.  These should be replaced at the same time for convenience.  Diaphragms do sometime split after long use.  The flap valves rarely give problems except for debris form the shower waste propping them open.  Toenails are quite a popular culprit.

Transformers  These rarely give a problem.  Most that are brought back are in fact working.  Those that are not show symptoms of having been wired incorrectly by the installer.  The transformer must be matched to the original kit.

Flow Switch  Again most that are brought back are still working.  Faults are always in the installation.  They must only be fitted with the pipe fittings in the kit.  Capillary and compression fittings must never be used. Past experience shows that many faults were caused by debris in the pipe not being flushed out by the installer.  Hence the inclusion of the filter.

Smoothflow sensor  We have never had to replace this item but as stated elsewhere a second will be required when using a gravity shower.

90mm gully  For use on the odd occasion that the shower tray already has the hole cut larger than the usual size.
